Fibromyalgia
Understanding the Condition
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties ("fibro fog"). It stems from abnormal pain processing in the brain and spinal cord, amplifying everyday sensations.
Affected Structures:
Muscles: Widespread pain, tenderness, and stiffness—commonly in the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and legs.
Ligaments: Joint pain and instability may occur.
Nervous System: An overactive central nervous system intensifies pain signals.
Possible Causes:
While the exact cause is unknown, factors may include genetics, prior infections, physical or emotional trauma, and chronic stress.
Symptoms:
Persistent, widespread pain (lasting at least three months)
Fatigue and a sense of weakness
Disrupted sleep and other sleep disorders
Cognitive difficulties or "fibro fog"
Additional symptoms: headaches, IBS, anxiety, depression, and sensitivity to stimuli
