Plantar Fasciitis: Understanding the Condition
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel and foot pain resulting from inflammation or degeneration of the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes and supporting the foot’s arch.
Anatomy & Structures:
Plantar Fascia: A robust, fibrous band from the heel to the metatarsal heads that absorbs shock during movement.
Muscles:
Flexor Digitorum Brevis helps flex the toes.
Abductor Hallucis supports the arch and moves the big toe.
Quadratus Plantae assists in toe flexion and stabilizes the foot.
Ligaments: The plantar fascia, divided into medial, central, and lateral bands, supports the arch.
Nerves: The medial and lateral plantar nerves (branches of the tibial nerve) transmit sensation and pain from the foot.
Causes:
Overuse: Repetitive activities like running or prolonged standing strain the fascia.
Foot Mechanics: Flat feet or high arches increase stress on the tissue.
Improper Footwear: Lack of support and cushioning can contribute.
Age & Weight: Reduced elasticity with age and extra weight can heighten the risk.
Symptoms:
Sharp heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning or after rest.
Pain that worsens during weight-bearing activities.
Tenderness, swelling, and stiffness in the heel and along the arch.
