Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) Therapy

Overview

IASTM Therapy is a non-invasive manual technique that uses specialized instruments to treat soft tissue dysfunction. It helps break down fascial restrictions, improve circulation, and promote tissue healing without surgery or medications. Often used as an adjunct to chiropractic care, Often used alongside chiropractic care, IASTM is an integral part of our comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal health.

What It Is

IASTM employs precision tools to apply controlled pressure on muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This targeted approach addresses adhesions, scar tissue, and myofascial restrictions to restore normal movement and reduce pain.

How It Works

  • Tissue Assessment: Identifies areas of dysfunction.

  • Mechanical Stimulation: Applies controlled pressure to break down restrictive tissue.

  • Increased Circulation: Enhances blood flow and lymphatic drainage.

  • Neuromuscular Stimulation: Activates sensory receptors to ease pain and improve movement.

Benefits

  • Reduces pain and soft tissue restrictions.

  • Enhances mobility and flexibility.

  • Speeds up recovery from injuries.

  • Offers a drug-free, non-invasive treatment option.

  • Complements chiropractic care for a comprehensive approach to spinal and musculoskeletal health.

What to Expect

Your treatment begins with an evaluation to create a personalized plan. Sessions typically last 5 to 10 minutes, and many patients experience noticeable improvements in pain and movement with minimal side effects.

Experience a focused, integrative approach to healing that not only restores mobility and reduces discomfort but also enhances the overall benefits of your chiropractic care.

Your Questions, Answered

  • IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization — a category of treatment that uses specially designed tools to treat scar tissue, fascial restrictions, and adhesions in muscle and tendon. The Graston Technique is the most widely recognized IASTM method and the one most patients are familiar with. At Peak Performance, we use Graston-style instruments to detect and break down tissue restrictions that hands alone cannot address as precisely.

  • The stainless steel instruments allow the provider to feel subtle changes in tissue texture — scar tissue, adhesions, and fascial tightness — that are difficult to detect manually. The instruments also allow for a specific, localized pressure that standard massage cannot replicate. The goal is to break down restriction at the tissue level, not just relax surface muscle.

  • IASTM can cause mild discomfort during treatment, especially over areas with significant scar tissue or restriction. Most patients describe it as tolerable pressure — similar to deep tissue work. Some temporary redness or light bruising over the treated area is normal and resolves within a day or two. The temporary discomfort is typically followed by improved mobility and reduced pain.

  • IASTM is commonly used for tendinopathies, post-surgical scar tissue, IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, and chronic neck or back stiffness. It is particularly useful for injuries where tissue quality has deteriorated and normal range of motion has not fully returned despite other treatments.
