Whiplash and Auto Injuries

What It Is:
Whiplash is a neck injury from a sudden, forceful head movement—common in car accidents and sports. Auto injuries also include back and soft tissue injuries.

Causes:

  • Rear-end, side-impact, or high-speed collisions

  • Sudden impact that jerks the head and neck, straining muscles, ligaments, and discs

Symptoms:

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Headaches (often starting at the base of the skull)

  • Shoulder and back pain

  • Numbness or tingling in the arms/hands

  • Dizziness, fatigue, and reduced neck mobility

Types of Whiplash:

  • Cervical Acceleration-Deceleration (CAD) Injury: Head thrown forward/backward

  • Hyperextension: Head thrown backward

  • Hyperflexion: Head thrown forward

  • Whiplash-Associated Disorders (WAD): General whiplash symptoms

  • Specific Injuries: Muscle, nerve, joint, and disc injuries

Types of Auto Injuries:

  • Whiplash

  • Soft tissue injuries (sprains/strains)

  • Back injuries (herniated discs, fractures)
